    If you have good paint adhesion there is no need to use paint stripper. You can sand the edges of the chips, feather them out, prime and sand to smooth, and then paint. Typically all paint stripper does is make your job 10x harder, not better.

    • @samuelwiltzius
      @samuelwiltzius 10 годин тому

      After 80+ years the paint varied widely from in tact to really poor. The decision to use stripper was because it had been repainted at least once and I had just finished freshening up the paint on a Bridgeport using only mechanical surface prep and it revealed it's own issues. I figured I might as well go all in and strip it... and all the paint dust from sanding the Bridgeport was a huge nuisance that I was happy to not repeat. A few areas like on the base and underside of the chip tray were quite good - but they were also the easiest to strip.

    Very nice! This is useful because I intend to do a similar cleanup on my Index 645 without a full disassembly. My lathe came with an ENC VFD. The instructions were terrible. I had set up my mill with a US brand of VFD and it was a breeze. I knew what I wanted the ENC to do; it was just harder to understand what to do to get there. On both of my machines I retained the original controls and wired/programmed them to the VFD.

    Disposal ear plugs work good for keeping the paint out of the bolt holes. If you don’t use them a chase tap will clean them out. Also look up Don Dyer machining on UA-cam, he is very knowledgeable about this manufacturer. Turned out great tho man 👍🏻 I went with a 2013 Clausing Metosa C1330s for my home shop. It’s a great machine, but nothing beats a Monarch. I just wish they spun faster. Mine cranks up to 2500 RPM’s and cuts metric and imperial threads, but it’s less than half the weight of yours and the heavy cast body is what makes it cut so good, among other things. Nowadays everything is CNC, I just don’t have the same interest in them. Enjoyed your series on the restoration.

    I have 3 -100 GPD membranes and I’m running at 100 psi . But in order to get to .5 % I have to run it twice should I add more membranes??

    • @samuelwiltzius
      @samuelwiltzius 2 місяці тому

      you can increase to 120-130 psi, add more membranes, or put both permeate and concentrate in the same barrel and run until you reach the desired brix. When I do birch sap I dump the conc. line back into the sap barrel and run until I get a fairly high brix, then move the conc. line into a pot until the pot is full and barrel empty.

    Samuel the Monarch that you have selected is among the best manual engine lathes ever made I Have owned a number of them over the last 50 years. about the shifting on the go those machines were referred to as a long handle or long arm machine and if you look at a lot of pictures online you’ll notice that the lever closest to the chuck is broken I’m assuming it’s from people trying to shift on the go they would have a violent kick back and break the handles right off I would avoid it if I were you . looks like you’re doing a great job restoring

    • @samuelwiltzius
      @samuelwiltzius 2 місяці тому

      Thanks Jim! As someone squarely in the hobby side of things I will take my time when shifting gears. Thats interesting about kickback. I just assumed the handle got smashed by some external force - thinking about that much force coming from the machine is frankly a little scary. I suppose a 200lb chuck can carry a lot of energy - I’m currently using an 8” 3-jaw for most things and find it very enjoyable compared to the larger chucks that came with it.

    Thank you for this! I inherited a grizzly 20" planer that was, let's just say neglected and in need of some tlc. Feeling much better about tearing into it after watching you do it ;) Probably going to swap the in/out feed rollers like you did and upgrade to the rubber. sweet.

    • @samuelwiltzius
      @samuelwiltzius 2 місяці тому

      I have been using the tired out original in-feed metal roller just fine with the new rubber out-feed. Given that I barely have 500 bd ft through in 4 years (multiple passes of this boards) rubber on both is probably the best for a hobby shop since I don’t need the extra durability of metal for super high volume.
